We had a long weekend during the National holidays, also called the "Golden week". We didn't have any travel plans so stayed in Beijing and on one of the days made a trip to the Great wall.
If you live in Beijing, you might have been to the Great wall a couple of times already considering you'd often accompany friends or family who visit. We've only been to either the Badaling or Mutianyu sections of the wall, but there are other beautiful sections which aren't that touristy especially if you like to hike.
It was my 8th trip (or was it 9th?lost count!) to the wall, but was our son's first trip. We wanted to make sure we take him to visit before we ever decide to leave China. Being born here he'd have to take a walk on the wall to keep up to the Chinese saying " "Until you reach the Great Wall, you're no hero."
Travel Tips:
- Visiting the wall is great any time of the year, just make sure you are prepared with the right clothes for the weather
- Mutianyu is usually lesser crowded than Badaling
- Keep at least half a day for the trip, and don't plan too much for the rest of the day
- There are many restaurants on the way to the Wall , make sure you check the prices before deciding to order. Beware of tourist traps
- Always better to go with a trusted tour guide or hire a car
