Cost of Living in Beijing for an Indian Family

Most Expats come to Beijing with a good company package - it covers House Rentals, Medical Insurance, Annual Flight tickets and Children's Education...

For the rest of us I'd say monthly expenses would cost anything between 5000 and 10000 CNY based on personal lifestyle (this is excluding rent)

Expenses mainly include -

Rent: This depends on where you choose to stay and how big your apartment is. Living in Chaoyang District or in and around CBD , rent for a two bedroom apartment would cost 7000 CNY upwards

Electricity, gas and other utilities - Electricity in summer would cost more due to air-conditioning approx 200 CNY per month. This is a prepaid card, so you will need to recharge as per usage.
Gas and water are also prepaid, we manage to use a 200 CNY pre-paid card for 3 months or more.
Prepaid mobile sim cards are easily available - about 100 CNY a month. We use VOIP software and Skype to make international calls.

Hospitals - Most employees and their families are covered under Insurance by the company. We can recommend Sino - Japanese and Amcare Women's and children's hospitals that are not so expensive if you are not covered.

Transportation - Cheapest way of commutation is public transport. 1 CNY for a bus ticket , and 2 CNY for a one way ticket on the subway. If you plan to use the subway or bus regularly , it's easier to buy a prepaid card (easily available at most Subway stations)
Taxis start at a minimum of 10 CNY for 3 km, and there is a surcharge of 2 CNY additional to your taxi fare.
ie: If your taxi fare comes up to 18 CNY you will need to pay a total of 20 CNY  Remember to take your bill before you get off so that in case you've left something behind, you can call up the taxi company to get it back.

Eating out - Beijing has unlimited options for a foodie. Chinese food can be as cheap as 10 kuai per person or cost 50 kuai per person at a decent chinese cuisine restuarant. Western food is more expensive and can cost between 150 to 200 CNY per person. Indian food will cost about the same.
Indian grocery is available at a small shop in Sanlitun but is quite expensive. At the Metro supermarket you can get most spices.

Schooling - This is very expensive in Beijing. Most international schools and kindergartens fees can be as much as 120,000 CNY per year, and vary according to the school and the age of the child. Private bilingual schools may cost up to 200,000 CNY per year.

Hope this information helps to anyone looking to move to Beijing.

    1. Sorry for the late response Anshul. I suggest you choose Chaoyang/ Shunyi District to stay. It is more expat oriented than Haidian and other disctricts.
