Christmas in Beijing

Christmas in China is celebrated with as much enthusiasm as celebrated anywhere else in the world.
Beijing has begun to look colorful and bright thanks to the Christmas lights and decor put up everywhere...

Will you be in Beijing this Christmas? Here's a short guide on what we usually do during this time of the year.
Tree at China World Hotel, Guomao

Shopping
Most supermarkets like Metro, Carrefour etc will have Christmas trees and decor for sale.
We prefer to do our shopping at IKEA or at the Lai Tai Market (Nuren jie)
For those who want to shop at the comfort of their home - you can always shop online.
You'll get everything from Christmas trees to lights, candles, decorations, socks, tableware , coffee mugs on Taobao.com

Bazaars
There are Christmas bazaars held by schools and different organizations. We make sure we don't miss the German Embassy Christmas bazaar though it means braving it out in the cold for a chance to enter.
The currywurst, gluhwein, stollen and christmas carols make it worth it.

Charity
As they say Tis the season of sharing and giving. There are lot of charity organizations that are looking to raise their annual funds to help those in need.
We go to the Renqiu Orphanage and elders home this time of the year to celebrate christmas with them.

This is the time everyone is also doing some annual clearing of things at home.
You can visit http://www.roundaboutchina.com/ if you'd like to make some donations (including children's clothes , toys , furniture)

Church
There is a midnight mass at the Xuanwumen South Cathedral and also one at the Wangfujing Cathedral usually in Chinese, but on Christmas day both churches will have mass in
English.
